- 1861, from Serbo-Cr. glagolica "Glagolitic alphabet," from Old Church Slavonic glagolu "word" (see call) + Greek suffix -itic. The older of the two Slavic writing systems (Cyrillic is the other), it was designed by Cyrillus c.863 C.E.
