Old Norse skaup, skop "mockery," Middle Danish skof "jest, mockery;" perhaps from Proto-Germanic *skub-, *skuf- (cf. Old English scop "poet," Old High German scoph "fiction, sport, jest, derision;" see scold), from PIE *skeub- "to shove."
